Day 7 - New Mexico to Arizona - 347 miles

Image
Another longer day (comparatively) so left at 6am We were concerned about the smoke, so I looked up the fires and was relieved to see that going up to Gallup, enabled us to avoid the wildfire road closings. The fires were on the Zuni reservation/preserve. Something I hadn't thought about until it was literally in my face. Each trip, there are more and more fires to avoid as we cross the country. Fortunately, there were several rain storms, hopefully, they made it to the dry fire areas. There was no 50 amp at the RV park in Santa Rosa (but at least there was hot fudge), so we did not charge overnight, so... Stop 1 Santa Rosa Holiday Inn Express - Tesla Supercharger 40% to 100% - 34 minutes @33¢/kWh for total of $18.68 Stop 2 164 miles to   Albuquerque, NM by  9:28am   Elevation 6500 feet Tesla Supercharger at a public parking lot 20% to 85% - 37 minutes - 36¢/kWh Stop 3 (scant notes) Milan, NM -  Tesla Supercharger $15.25 Had lunch (Tuna, chips & pickles) S...

More than halfway there We were plugged in at the park, but it was really slow but we still left with 96% Stop 1 8:30 am Shamrock, TX.  Old Route 66 gas station turned cafe . Once again, we are here too early to eat here. Had our usual breakfasts (muesli/fruit for Roger and protein/fruit smoothie for me) We also stopped here last year and also were too early to eat here.  All 6 stalls were head-ins at this Tesla Supercharger location 50% to 90% took exactly 20 minutes 31¢/kWh for total of $10 Stop 2 Amarillo, TX Flying J (not Tesla) head-in stall 27% to 90% - 218kW VERY fast!  (667mph)  Very expensive @62¢/kWh total was $42.98 (might as well been gas!) Stop 3 Tucumcari, TX Head-in. (no notes on this stop, sorry) Had lunch of our Tuna, chips & pickles Checked in to Santa Rosa Campground to site 35 at 1:08pm so had some time to chill after hooking up. $51.83 a night, including both senior and Good Sam discounts. This place has a restaurant! Had a pulled pork...

Day 5 - Missouri to Oklahoma - 326 miles

Image
Once again left Joplin KOA with a 100% charge. Longer than usual day ahead, so we left early. Stop 1 Hard Rock Casino with VERY LOUD music blaring at the stalls. Drive through, though so we were happy.  17% to 100%  (very slow charger) did not note the time, but it took a while--maybe 30 minutes or more. cost was 34¢/kWh for a total of $19 Stop 2 Walmart Parking Lot, Bristow, Oklahoma Electrify America supposedly 350kWh, but never went over 85kWh, Only 6 out of 8 stalls were working (typical for EA) 86% to 99% (needed to stop & add range to be able to make it to stop 3) 35¢ per kWh Stop 3 Oklahoma City, Tesla Supercharger 50% to 96% - 20 minutes Stopped at Elk City Lake Campground , $25 honor envelope. Very cool city campground. We practically had the place to ourselves and it was truly magical place. We walked around the area and found a amphitheatre that had been taken over by cliff swallows.  Such a calming vibe. Very nice place. I was worried about it being first...

Day 4 - Illinois to Missouri - 300 miles

Charged to 100% overnight at the KOA in Granite City, we were on the road early. Stop 1 Tesla Supercharger in Rolla, MO  14% to 90% - 21 minutes - cost $21.21 (see a pattern here?) No head-in stalls, but were able to come in from the side while only blocking two stalls (including the one we were using) Stop 2 100 miles later, Springfield, MO Made usual lunch (Tuna sandwiches, pickles and chips with milk for me and fake beer for Roger) 18% to 95% - 28 minutes Nice woman from Indiana offered to move from the head-in stall, so we wouldn't have to unhook. Got to Joplin KOA journey with 33% charge Checked in around 4pm. It was 86ºF and quite pleasant. We had full hookups and a 50 + 30 AMP electrical hookup so we could plug in the trailer and the car with no problems. As opposed to last year, we have had no flack whatsoever about plugging in the car. I think they realized that it does not use any more power than those gigantic rigs that use tons of electricity--way more than we do.

Day 3 - Kentucky to Illinois - 289 miles

Image
So long Louisville and on to Granite City More Blue Ridge and climbing, which affects range--especially when towing a couple tons behind you. CHARGING STOPS: Stop 1 Tesla supercharger, Preston Highway, Louisville, Kentucky, less than 8 miles past the campground. And it's a head-in! (so we didn't have to disconnect the trailer.) 31% to 100% - 30 minutes $0.24/kW - total $14.85 This place charges $1.00 a minute for idle time Stop 2 EVGo Flying J,  Haubstadt, Indiana 18% to 90% - < 20 mins $0.47/kW    $30 total The app didn't work here, so we used the credit card. Very fast charger. As you can see, it's a drive through. Stop 3 222 Potomac Blvd., Mt. Vernon, Illinois There were these weird [hydrants?] on the wall of the nearby building Tesla Supercharger, head-in 26% to 95%  25 mins $0.38/kW  $25.00 We checked in to KOA (St. Louis NE) Granite City , 3157 West Chain of Rocks, Madison County, Illinois 62040 around 3pm.  Got our 10% discount refund (a grand tot...

Day 2 - West Virginia to Kentucky - 314 miles

Up early to get a head start on the day. Leaving Caring Acres Farm was VERY  foggy , but we made it off the mountain with minimal issues. But Daisy and Bentley, Carl's dogs, were there to say goodbye as they were to greet us when we arrived yesterday. We had to change where we were going to stay tonight, because of flood waters taking out the RV place in Frankfort. I called to see if we could check in after 5--just in case-- and a recorded message said they were closed. So we found a KOA that had a couple spaces available. Phew! It would have been nice to know ahead of time, but the Frankfort place was wiped out entirely by the risen river. So glad I called. It's completely understandable that they didn't even know who was coming or when. I spoke with them since and they are back up and running, albeit no laundry or other facilities back online yet.  Charging: Stop 1 Since we boondocked the night before, we could not charge in our spot, so we charged in town near the farm. ...
